DESCRIPTION:
EPW - M.I. Tobias & Co, Liverpool, two-train independent dead beating center-seconds, 54mm, silver original consular HC with maker's mark "C & ET" believed for C. & E. Tracy of Philadelphia (active 1850 to 1853 per Niebling), slide on band at 4:30 starts and stops center-seconds, white enamel SS dial with 15-second register in 1/4-second increments, KWKS, lever escapement, likely 23J or greater, gilt mvt marked "Registered Patent 21 Feby 1848," s#35802 with matching serial number within the case. Comes with a key. A very nice example of this M.I. Tobias & Co. independent center-seconds watch and a rare piece to find in good condition with original case. The seconds-hand of the independent seconds train makes one revolution per minute pulsing with one-second beats while the hand within the subsidiary 15-second register makes four revolutions per minute pulsing with 1/4-second beats. This model of watch was exhibited by Tobias at London's Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 and was described as "Registered compound-seconds watch movement, a new configuration produced by combining a quarter-seconds train of wheels with an independent full-seconds train." Mvt: GRO, center-seconds barrel is missing stopworks, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous gilt surfaces with only very mild clouding immediately around winding arbors; dial with scattered hls; excellent hands; case shows light wear, an attractive acquired patina, dent/ding at the right edge of rear, engraving detail with some reduction; tight bow; good glass crystal.
